Description

KEY in Des Moines stands for Keeping Educated Youth in Des Moines.  It is a program connecting employers with area colleges and universities for workforce attraction.  Every other month the group hosts free educational sessions.  KEY in Des Moines is a division of the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce.

This month's speaker is Sherri Nielsen with Easter Seals.  Sherri will describe the many benefits of diversity in the workplace and dispel myths regarding employing persons with disability. She will also give employers guidance on how to best support persons with disability to be productive members of their workforce.

About the speaker: Sherri Nielsen is a passionate leader and advocate in the disability community. She finds pride in watching children and adults with disabilities achieve their dreams and goals.  Sherri’s mantra for Easter Seals Iowa is removing barriers and creating opportunities for independence.

Sherri has served Easter Seals Iowa for nearly 20 years and is passionate about carrying out the organization’s mission to provide exceptional services to ensure all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities.

Before serving as President and CEO of Easter Seals Iowa, Nielsen worked in a variety of roles within the organization. She started by supporting people with disabilities to obtain and keep employment and has also served as Chief Human Resource Officer and Chief Operations Officer.

She is a graduate of Dowling High School and obtained her BA in Psychology from Peru State College. Sherri is a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and a Certified DiSC Trainer.  Sherri is a member of the Greater Des Moines Partnership Inclusion Council and Central Iowa Society for Human Resource Management. She is a 2011 Leadership Iowa graduate and mentor for the Leadership University.
