The City of Urbandale is seeking motivated candidates for our Summer 2026 Civil Engineering Internship. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Engineering, interns will gain hands-on experience performing survey work, data collection, asset review, and data analysis to support the Engineering and Public Works Department. Interns will have an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge, develop practical skills, and contribute to meaningful public infrastructure projects in a dynamic and growing community.
This temporary internship is open to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in civil or construction engineering and runs from mid-May through mid-August 2026.
Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Collects traffic counts and assist with traffic studies.
- Assist with field inspection of public infrastructure inspections as directed.
- Perform data collection, GIS data entry and database management.
- Perform GPS data collection.
- Complete assigned projects of GIS processing and analysis in a timely manner.
- Develop maps and drawings utilizing GIS and MicroStation.
- Assist with field collection and database processing GPS data.
- Survey with GPS and Total Station Equipment.
- Complete projects and other duties as assigned.
- Assist with customer inquires and special projects as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- Must be an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in civil or construction engineering.
- Must have High School Diploma or GED.
- Must have a valid Driver's License.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
- Ability to understand and work from written and/or oral instructions.
- Ability to handle confidential information in a sensitive manner.
- Advanced mathematical skills.
- Excellent telephone techniques.
- Accurate typing skills.
- Ability to take initiative.
- Proficiency with PC’s and computer software and applications, including, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software. Proficiency in CAD, GIS, GPS, and/or civil engineering design software is desired but not required.
- Ability to perform essential duties at designated work site location at designated hours.
